With my brainstorming buddy and awesome-writer friend Jeanine, I drove to Albany from New England two weekend ago to attend the Capital Region RWA’s “A Writer’s Toolkit” Conference. Jazzed to be on the two-speaker docket with Angela Knight for Saturday, I was greeted by friends Jen and I hadn’t met yet. Everyone made us feel welcome and right at home.
Friday night presented an extra treat, a panel made up of agents Miriam Kriss and Steven Axelrod with Heather Osborn from Tor Publishing. As a result of that panel, I fin
Over the weekend, I got to spend some time with Heather from Tor, a great lady and a knowledgeable editor. I’m looking forward to our lunch together when I go to New York.
On Saturday, Angela Knight gave a workshop on action scenes—all kinds of action, wink, wink—with a great, eye candy presentation. I gave my characters and storymapping workshops, about peopling our stories, plotting them, and keeping things moving. No sagging middles in our stories, thank you very much.
Saturday night, I was so psyched about my writing, I made copious notes and read over my WIP while we got room service and generally chilled out.
From the company to the meals to meeting new and old friends, the Albany Conference was a bright spot in my busy schedule and I’d attend again in a heartbeat. Kudos to the conference committee, and thank you for thinking of me.
Wonderful writers, new friends, and altogether wonderful experience.
Happy Writing & Happy Weekend.
What do you like best about writers or readers conferences?

I've never had the opportunity to attend one. Have attended a few librarian/teacher workshops, but that's not the same. We are talking about books and writers, not talking to you. Have had a few local writers visit our small library. It has been interesting talking with them. It would be interesting to attend the workshops and just listen to everyone discuss the process. Being able to talk with the authors would be a big benefit. I'd probably as all those questions you are so tired of hearing.
I haven't attended one either but I told my husband that next year I was going to the BEA for sure! Hopefully I'll really be able to make it. I would love to meet more people who share my interests.
Librarypat, I never tire of answering questions, even if I've answered them before, and there's a growth arc that we all go through as writers, so I might not answer the same way I did in the past and explain how my writing process or thought processes has changed on the subject.
bridget, I would highly recommend it. I always say that I never really get to know my writing chapter friends until I spend a weekend with them at a conference. I've never been to BEA either. That's on my list for someday. But what a lot of writers you'd meet. I hope we both get to do that soon.
BRAVO!
Sounds like you had a wonderful time, and a wonderfully productive time as well. As a closet writer, I'd love to just attend a workshop to listen and possibly learn -- then all I'd have to do is overcome my trepidations about my own stuff :) Anyway, I'm glad you had a great time.
It all sounds really super. I've never been to one, but I'll have to try to some time.
Dawn, I hope you get the opportunity to attend a workshop or conference one of these days. It might even help you overcome your trepidations. Best to you.
They're very worthwhile, Jane. You learn so much whether you're a beginning author or someone 20 published books. There's always something golden to be learned.
Wow! Now that sounds like fun! :-)
